Normal contractive projections preserve type

Summary:  Given a ${\rm JBW}^*$-triple $Z$ and a normal contractive projection $P:Z\rightarrow Z$, we show that the (Murray-von Neumann) type of each summand of $P(Z)$ is dominated by the type of $Z$.
